about

A sonic exploration of the Brexit referendum, merging Musique-Concrete, technological decay, and rigorous academic socio-political research.
‘Brexshitting’ is the distinctly partisan documentation of the incongruous, underhand, and duplicitous narratives framing the 2016 EU withdrawal referendum colloquially known as Brexit. Invoking Pierre Henry’s reel-to-reel experiments, Brexshitting infuses the degradation and latent noise of the political sphere with the caustic timbres and limited-fidelity of the lathe-record press.

Broaching the disparate worlds of thoroughbred academia and DIY culture, ‘Brexshitting’ conjures a horizon of familiar, everyday sounds, augmenting them with the noise, distortion, and wear of the lathe medium.
The underpinning research that Brexshitting interrogates uses what linguist Michael Halliday terms the ‘functional grammar’ of the Brexit debate – the tone, timbre, rhythm, and frequency of political framing the debate. Distinct compositional approaches are forged from the murky, duplicitous linguistic traits of politicians and the media invested in Brexit.
Field recordings were taken from those paragons of Brexit, the EU headquarters in Brussels, and a Wetherspoons pub in Brexit-central – Kent. These mundane snapshots of inane chatter contrast with the sporadic buzz of a modular synth. Erratic melodies are drawn from datasets detailing the frequency and tenor of media discourse – snatches of political slogans fading in and out, meaningless repetitions voided into an endless ether.

Conceived, recorded, and produced by the composer’s Distant Animals, Antoine Canon and Dylan Beattie, the project catalogs the dominant narratives of the debate, with particular focus on language that walked a critical line between the conveniences of abstraction and the meaningless gesticulations of populism.

The album includes a 12 page zine containing Brexit themed research, alongside 9 original reinterpretations by some of the most vital voices in the underground experimental, sound-art, ambient, and electronic scene.
